The "infinity wall" (also called the weir wall) is constructed at a height slightly below the designed water level. Water continuously flows over this wall and falls into a catch basin directly below, hidden from view at the pool level. A dedicated overflow pump then returns the collected water from the catch basin back into the main pool — completing the circulation loop.

The engineering challenge is in the weir wall height. If it is even a few millimetres too high, water will not flow evenly across the full width of the edge, creating an uneven, broken effect that ruins the illusion. Not every property is suited — but many more are than people think. You need at least a small elevation difference or a meaningful backdrop that the water can appear to spill into. Flat properties surrounded by structures at the same height are the rare exception where a true infinity edge is not possible. What is the difference between an infinity pool and an overflow pool?
An infinity pool (vanishing-edge pool) overflows on one or two edges only, creating the visual effect of water merging with the horizon or landscape. The overflow is directional and deliberate. An overflow pool (also called a wet-edge or mirror pool) overflows on all four edges simultaneously, creating a perfectly flat mirror surface that reflects the sky. An overflow pool works on a flat site — an infinity pool does not. Both require a catch basin and overflow return system, but the design intent and visual effect are completely different.
Does an infinity pool use more water than a standard pool?
No — in a correctly engineered infinity pool, water is not lost. The overflow is caught by the catch basin and pumped back into the pool in a closed loop. Water loss in an infinity pool is the same as any other pool: evaporation, splash-out, and backwash. The catch basin does need to be topped up along with the main pool during routine maintenance — but this is not additional water consumption, it is part of the normal operating volume of the system.
