The Engineering Challenge
A commercial pool in a high-traffic hospitality environment is a fundamentally different engineering problem from a residential pool. The physics are unforgiving: where a private pool might see twenty bathers a week, a club pool endures that in an afternoon. Water chemistry extremes — the constant battle between chlorine demand and bather load — accelerate degradation in structures built to residential tolerances. UV exposure at Kerala's latitude, compounded by the reflective surface of an adjacent fairway, demands materials chosen for decades, not years. And constant operation, 365 days a year, means there is no off-season for the structure to recover.
Most pools fail not because of catastrophic structural collapse, but because of cumulative micro-degradation: hairline cracks in the shell that admit water behind the waterproofing membrane, grout that slowly erodes under aggressive sanitisers, filter systems that were sized for initial demand rather than peak commercial load. Sized for peak bather load rather than average demand, it was engineered to achieve 5-micron filtration — a standard that removes not just visible particulate but the sub-visible contaminants that cloud water and accelerate chemical demand. The result: water clarity that remained resort-quality at the end of a busy weekend, not just a quiet Tuesday morning.
Tile work and finish materials were selected with a 25-year service life as the design criterion. Moothedan's procurement team sourced tiles rated for commercial aquatic environments, with chemical resistance certification. The grout system — a detail that most contractors treat as an afterthought — was specified for permanent flexibility, preventing the micro-cracking that typically begins within five years in standard installations.
